Supporting small-scale fishermen

Thank-you members! Your support this season made it possible for us to provide small-scale fishermen with a fair price for their catch.

Our full-time fishermen made approximately $32,000 this summer. If they had been selling those same fish at the prices set by big businesses, they would have only made $24,000. That’s an $8,000 difference! When you consider the high costs of licenses, boats, and fuel, that $8,000 is the difference between etching out a decent living and not.

We also had more part-time fishermen than ever before. Word has gotten out about what we do and the fair prices we offer, and Otto has been getting a lot of knocks on his door. Fishermen want to sell their premium seafood to us because we value the hard-work and skill it takes to catch high-quality sustainable seafood in an environmentally conscious manner.

This year we were able to loan a young fishermen from Hartley Bay the money to get set up for the season. The high licensing and boat fees can be prohibitive for fishermen who lack access to capital. One of the only ways around this is to take a loan from one of the big businesses who then force the fishermen to sell all their fish to them at a price they set, which is quite a bit lower than what we think is fair and than what we pay our fishermen. Your support creates an alternative for talented young fishermen.
