Seafood Delight instead of Seafood Fraud!

Sonia - May 27, 2014

What if you could have a delicious and healthy seafood dinner, without worrying about where your fish comes from, how it was caught or even if it’s really wild salmon that you’re barbequing? In an industry where one in three fish sold in restaurants or stores is mislabeled, our Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery cuts out the middleman and brings seafood directly from fishermen’s boats to your forks!

Seafood fraud is the worrisome reality that we, as consumers, are living through when we order a fish meal in a restaurant or buy seafood in a store and learn that sometimes more than 50 percent of seafood is fraudulently mislabeled as wild salmon, Albacore tuna or Atlantic cod, when in fact what we are getting on our plate are less desirable, cheaper species. By ensuring complete boat-to-fork transparency Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery model is a reliable alternative to this problematic and dominant industrial fishing model which we, as consumers, have no control over. By becoming CSF members you get to know your fisherman and have the guarantee of having a plate full of nothing but premium, fair trade, Ocean Wise and wild BC seafood!

We all know that industrial fishing practices affect more than just consumers, as small-scale sustainable fishing operations have been declining steadily and independent fishermen are losing their livelihood with the rise of aquaculture and corporate fishing practices. In operation for five years now, Skipper Otto’s CSF, through its membership system, supports independent fishermen and transforms members from simple buyers and consumers of fish into investors in a robust local food system and the future health of our oceans.

The 2014 fishing season is about to set off and is expected to be one of the most bountiful sockeye salmon seasons of the last decades! As Otto, Shaun and the other fishermen are getting ready to sail, this week our Skipper Otto fishing family is rounding up the last members who will enjoy all the benefits of belonging to the CSF this year, with the sign-up period for Vancouver ending on May 31st and just a few spots left before the waiting list for next year’s season opens!
