Shellfish

We offer a wide variety of shellfish. Our wild, flash-frozen spot prawn tails are caught live, quickly tailed and packed into 6 oz or 1 lb tubs aboard the boat. Our wild, pink and spiny scallops are individually frozen and packed into 2 lb packages. We also offer cans of smoked scallops. 

In Vancouver, we offer live options at various False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf pick-ups during the year. We offer mussels every week during their season, while live Dungeness crab and beach oysters are usually available a few times a year. 

The gear method used for our spot prawns and crab is trapping, growing and harvesting for oysters and mussels, and an innovative butterfly trawl that minimizes bottom contact for our swimming scallops.

Spot prawns are caught during May and June each year and we aim to stock them through at least December each year. Scallops are caught between November and February each year, but we aim to keep them in stock year round. Live Mussels are available at weekly pick-ups between July to March. Live Dungeness Crab is available on 2-3 occasions between August and March. Live beach oysters are available on 2-3 occasions between November and March.

We buy directly from our fishers, which allows us to offer our members competitive prices while paying our fishers fair wages. The prices for 2024 are shown here. Prices can fluctuate each year, and higher price ranges reflect the inclusion of shipping costs for locations outside of Metro Vancouver.

As a 4th generation fisher, Joel grew up fishing and took over his parents fishing operations in 2014. Melissa, who has a background as a biologist married into the industry.     Richard is a fourth generation fisher who hails from Sointula, BC. And actually fellow Skipper Otto fisherman, Cary Williams first cousin! He first started fishing when he was 12 years old, and has been on the water for over 23 years, captaining his boat and crew for just over 10 years now.

    Richard Michelson

    Richard is a fourth generation fisher who hails from Sointula, BC. And actually fellow Skipper Otto fisherman, Cary Williams first cousin! He first started fishing when he was 12 years old, and has been on the water for over 23 years, captaining his boat and crew for just over 10 years now.

  • Duncan Cameron

    Duncan is a multi-generation fisher, specifically a fourth generation fisherman in Canada, but originating from family of fishermen in Scotland generations prior. Having grown up in an active multi-species fishing family, Duncan spent a lot of his childhood along the coast, so sees the value sustainable small-scale fisheries have in supporting coastal communities. While he continues to spend most of his time out on the boat, he is one of our more urban fishermen, hailing from Vancouver, BC and working just down the locker bay from us at False Creek Fishermen's Wharf.

    Duncan Cameron

Having grown up in an active multi-species fishing family, Duncan spent a lot of his childhood along the coast, so sees the value sustainable small-scale fisheries have in supporting coastal communities. While he continues to spend most of his time out on the boat, he is one of our more urban fishermen, hailing from Vancouver, BC and working just down the locker bay from us at False Creek Fishermen's Wharf.

    Delia and her partner Scott came aboard in 2015 when she emailed us looking for a way to connect her lovingly-grown oysters to local consumers. She had heard about our CSF and was very eager that our innovative model of connecting fishermen directly to consumers might provide an alternative to selling her shellfish overseas. We are proud to offer ethical, local shellfish directly to our members and at being able to help the shellfish growers of Cortes Island continue their traditional, small-scale way of life.
