Okanagan Fruit CSA – delivery to Vancouver

Sonia - July 25, 2013

We have been so happy with our Community Supported Model! The connection is creates with our members allows for a more robust food system. Your support ensures we receive a fair price for our catch and are able to survive in an industry dominated by big business. Without caring people like you, many talented independent fishermen wouldn’t be able to stay in businesses, and we wouldn’t be able to offer premium, local, wild sustainable seafood.

Al Tinka, a long-time friend of Otto’s (they taught high-school together in Penticton) geared his orchard towards Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) after seeing the success of our CSF.

Al is incredibly hard-working and passionate about organic growing and sustainable food systems. The fruit at Tinka Orchard is absolutely delicious. Switching to the CSA model has allowed Al to connect to consumers who value the high quality of his fruit and the sustainable practices he lives by. This direct connection allows him to receive the full value of his crop. The large percentages scooped by middle-men often leads to small, sustainable operations being economically non-sustainable. The Tinka Orchard CSA still has a few shares remaining for this season, and they deliver their glorious Okanagan fruit to East Vancouver. See below for more information.

Tinka Orchard CSA is a small orchard fruit CSA that supports the farm of Al Tinka in Summerland, BC. Al takes great pride in farming naturally, as he has for decades.

All fruit is non-certified organic, spray free, and hand thinned and picked with care by Al himself.

The details for this year are as follows: A standard share will consist of 100 lbs of fruit, with approximate composition as follows: Each package consisting of approx. 50 lb Plums (6 varieties – substitutions possible, see below) + 25 lb Pears (3 varieties) + 25 lb Apples (Mac, Jonagold, Gala, Newtown, Fuji, Ambrosia, Goldblush and Wagner. Not available this year are – Red and Gold Delicious, Spartan, Jonathan, Wealthy).

Cost: $250

Now, we know that many find the quantity of plums too much for their use, so we will once again be offering substitutions of apples/pears for plums later in the season (subject to availability and at the rate of around 2 lbs apples/pears per lb. of plums), or the option to reduce your total share quantity for a refund. Additional orders will be taken where quantities permit.

We once again anticipate 3-4 pickups from August – October, subject to fruit ripening. Primary pickups will be in East Vancouver but if member geography permits, may be able to help coordinate secondary pickups in other locations.

Those are the basics, but please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions! If you’d like to participate, let me know ([email protected]) and I’ll send payment information. If you have family, friends, or co-workers that you think may be interested, please pass along our info!
