Meet Truong Le Nguyen, Our Newest Prawner!

Allison Hepworth - June 30, 2021

Meet Truong Le Nguyen, our newest prawner! This past season he fished along the central coast of BC, tailing and freezing his prawn catch for our members.

Originally from Vietnam, Truong was one of the first boat people (refugees who fled Vietnam after the war) to land in the Philippines, and he was sponsored to move to Canada in 1975. He lived in Montreal for 9 years, where he met his wife. He heard he could make a good living fishing, so they drove west and found Campbell River, BC. With no experience fishing, he went to the docks and bought a prawn license from an Indigenous fisherman. He’s been prawning now for 30 years, and recently got a loan for a boat and license to employ other local Vietnamese fishers. ⠀

He fishes with his sons and his daughter, Thao, who is passionate about sharing her family’s story, and wants Vietnamese families’ fishing stories to be told. Thao worked with us to build systems so that her father could begin tailing, tubbing, and freezing his spot prawns to access a good price and share his fascinating life story with Skipper Otto members. We’re so excited to welcome aboard Truong and his family! His delicious frozen-at-sea spot prawns are available in the Dock now!
