July was a record-breaking hot, dry summer out here on the BC coast! Our fishermen have been working hard hauling in the best seafood of the season, and observing how the weather is affecting our spawning salmon and our waters.

Fishing Updates

Otto gillnetted for salmon off the Nass River opening throughout the entire month. He had a couple of weeks where muck in the northern waters made it impossible for anyone to fish since the muck collected on the nets, the fish could see them, and would just swim around. Fishing in the north this year hasn’t been overly successful for our fishermen, but they’ve managed to scratch away at it and catch us some beautiful fish!

Shaun and Rod fished in Barkley Sound throughout July. Fishing in Barkley Sound was quite good compared to the north and Shaun and Rod each had a few days with big hauls! There is likely to be a week or two break in fishing now until chinook openings in Nootka Sound mean Shaun and Rod can resume fishing.

Rod's hydraulics broke down so he and his deck-hand, Ethan, had to hand-pull in the nets just like fishermen did in days before hydraulics! Good thing Ethan is a strapping young guy!

Tien’s prawning season has been significantly delayed by his boat repairs. He is nearly finished with a major engine repair and expects to get out prawning within the next week or two. We’re looking forward to offering you his prawns just as soon as he can get out to catch them!
