Holiday Mode

My favourite part of working for Skipper Otto’s is hearing from you – our members and customers. These last few weeks what I’ve been hearing is that many of you have entered “Holiday Mode”. You’re fine tuning your lists of what to give and what to get, you’re researching recipes, and planning your time wisely to optimize time with friends and family. If you’re not in “Holiday Mode” you’re in “Holiday Denial”, because after all it is only November and we will all have plenty of time to find the perfect gift, the perfect dish and find plenty of time to hangout with friends. What could be hard about any of that?

Regardless of the type of Holiday “planner” you are, I’ve heard some great stories this season about how you are incorporating your values in your gift giving this season. One of my favourites came from a mother in Saskatchewan who’s children now live in Vancouver. This year for Christmas she plans on giving each of them a CSF membership. She may not be able to cook for them everyday like when they were home but she can certainly make sure they have access to good food!

I love this idea because it tackles an issue I struggle with every year – avoiding waste. This gift idea also really struck me because it reminded me of when I lived away from home as a student. The best days were always when I was able to sneak home for a weekend and return with home cooked food or, on the odd occasion, enjoy a care package sent from home. The idea of unwrapping something under the tree that I could take home and use all year really excites me as does local, wild, Ocean Wise seafood! That may sound like a shameless plug for Skipper Otto’s, but there is a reason I work here, I really do LOVE sustainable seafood.

I’m looking forward to reducing waste this season and finding gifts for my family and friends that involve memberships, activities, and food. It’s an amazing feeling to know that while I look for gifts that reflect my values this holiday season I am also working for an organization that reflects them. If you have any other ideas for local, sustainable gifts let me know in the comments!
