How often do you see wild BC sockeye salmon in Halifax? Well, you’ll find it a little more easily now thanks to a partnership between Skipper Otto’s CSF in Vancouver, Hooked fish store in Toronto, and Off the Hook CSF in Halifax.
Skipper Otto’s Community Supported Fishery creates partnerships between small-scale, independent fishermen and thoughtful consumers to build strong local economies and communities and to provide premium, wild, and
sustainable seafood. Our partnerships are not limited to BC, or even to Alberta, and Saskatchewan where we have CSF members. We also sell our fish to “Hooked,” a boutique fish store in Toronto and they have come up with a great new project to get our salmon to “Off the Hook” CSF in Halifax!
“Hooked” is a different kind of fish store, run since 2011 by the family of chefs Kristin and Dan Donovan. They are committed to supporting the local economy by bypassing the traditional supply chain and buying directly from producers like Skipper Otto’s fishermen, Shaun and Duncan, or Off the Hook’s groundfish and lobster fishermen Tony, Beau and Chris.
“Off the Hook” is Atlantic Canada’s first CSF that supports our brothers in fishing on the other side of the country. Just as Skipper Otto’s CSF is committed to ensuring that independent, small-scale, low-impact fishermen who fish the Canadian Pacific waters receive a fair price for their catch, Off the Hook’s CSF is keeping the same commitment towards Nova Scotia’s fishing communities and is ensuring that the same fair prices and low-impact fishing practices are maintained in the Canadian Atlantic waters. It is through these values that our sister organizations stay true to our common vision of building strong local economies and enhancing the triple bottom line.
Hooked, Off the Hook, and Skipper Otto’s CSF share the mission of empowering you, our consumers, by giving you only the best choices when it comes to what fish is seasonal and most sustainable to consume, and how to best process and preserve it, so that every meal that you serve will have that “wow” factor. Since Hooked buys fish from Skipper Otto’s CSF and from Off the Hook CSF, they came up with a way to ship some of our salmon all the way to Halifax. Thanks to Hooked, our famous and delicious BC sockeye salmon is now being enjoyed by Off the Hook’s CSF members on the Atlantic Coast! We hope you are enjoying it, Haligonians!
