Run Predictions

Sonia - July 11, 2013

Thankfully Otto, Leonard, and Daniel were successful up North catching Nass Sockeye because it appears the other Sockeye runs will be limited this year. The Department of Oceans and Fisheries is predicting that the commercial Sockeye fishery for Prince Rupert will not open. Sockeye have four-year cycles,  and in 2009 only one tenth of the expected 10 million sockeye returned to Fraser River watershed.

Happily, predictions for Coho and Pink Salmon are looking much more positive! Coho retention (which means you can keep Coho that get caught in your net when you are trying to catch another species) is being allowed for the first time in 20 years.

Pink runs are looking very abundant, and Pink Salmon is considered a “green” choice. The BC Pink fishery is the 6th in the province to receive certification from the Marine Stewardship Council – an independent, global, non-profit organization based in London, England, which uses United Nations guidelines for its certifications. Most of BC’s Pink Salmon are exported to the U.K., Belgium, and New Zealand. It’s time locals started enjoying more of this delicious salmon too!
