Our Values

The principles that guide us

At Skipper Otto, we use our values as guiding principles for making everyday decisions. Here are just a few of our values, developed in collaboration with Community Supported Fisheries across North America through the Localcatch.org network as we attempt to better define our movement.

Eating with the ecosystem

Eating with the ecosystem means matching our seafood consumption to the rhythms of nature and place. It means celebrating and respecting a region’s marine biodiversity by harvesting a diversity of seafood and respecting the unique seasonality of every species and fishery. It means appreciating the ocean as a complex ecological system and engaging and educating consumers to enable them to become conscious consumers of the ocean’s food production capacity.

Traceable and simple supply chains

Traceable and simple supply chains promote trust and a more direct relationship between fishermen, the public, consumers, retailers, wholesalers, managers and chefs. More direct and simple supply chains help maximize value to the fishermen and consumer. Information on who, how, where, and when a fish was caught, processed and distributed should be readily available to consumers. We encourage all seafood consumers to try local first.

Community and ecosystem based fisheries management

Fisheries management is key for maintaining sustainable fish stocks and livelihoods. Management should be bottom-up, ecosystem-based, and foster collaboration between fishermen, scientists, policy makers, and the broader public. Management should combat illegal fishing, consolidation, and privatization. Management should also address non-fishing impacts that threaten the health of our fisheries, such as climate change, ocean acidification, and pollution.

How it works

Our four step process

1

Make a pledge to our community

Sign up and pay before the season starts to secure your share of the catch. Don’t worry about guessing your perfect size; you can top up or rollover small unused amounts later.

2

Our fishermen hit the seas

Our local, independent fishing families love working with us because we treat them with the dignity and humanity they deserve, paying timely, living wages, and helping with the steep upfront costs of fishing.

3

Take your pick from our catch

We’ll help you eat with the ecosystem by explaining what your most abundant and sustainable choices are each year. Browse from our wide selection of both popular favourites and lesser-known delicacies you won’t find anywhere else and choose only what you want.

4

Pick up your delicious seafood

Collect your orders of wild, BC, Ocean Wise recommended seafood at multiple locations across Canada.

Seafood variety

What seafood can I get?

Take your pick from a huge variety of fresh, frozen, sushi-grade, whole, and portioned products as well as canned and smoked seafood throughout the year. You’ll be thrilled by the quality!

Choose from well-known favourites like salmon and halibut, and try out lesser-known, abundant delicacies like lingcod and pink scallops. We’ll teach you about what’s in season when, and give you recipe ideas to help you feel comfortable trying new things.

Rather than stockpiling past season’s catches, we allow our community to experience eating what the ecosystem provides. Some years, some species will be lower in abundance. And while you’ll still have opportunities to enjoy them, we’ll also suggest other, more abundant species to try, too.

"This is an amazing service. I love that the food is from right outside my window and I can walk to pick up the catch. Plus we keep local people working. :)"
