A message from Duncan – our halibut fisherman!

We left Port last Sunday for fishing grounds we had heard good things about this year. As we headed out with the sun setting in front of us the seas were calm and it looked like it was going to be an easy trip. Around midnight as we got offshore the weather began to deteriorate, along with the long term forecast. We arrived at the grounds around 4am Monday. We had planned to start setting gear as soon as we arrived, however it was much to rough to fish so we left the stabilizerss out and tried to catch up on sleep. Mother nature had other plans though, sleep was a little hard to grab with each wave reorganizing our stores from the cupboards to the floor. Crew moral was pretty low as we wondered why we didn’t fish in our usual protected waters. fortunately at dusk strong winds subsided and we began cutting bait for the next day.
As if I wasn’t nervous enough about fishing a new area 10 hours from any land the next morning we turned on the radio forecast with coffee and it was clear that we were going to have to find the fish and get out fast as the forecast was continuing to change for the worse. We started setting Our long line with squid, salmon and octopus for bait. Once the gear is set we let is soak and then start hauling it back around 11am. Pulling up the first buoy line the crew was very excited to see what we were in for, I could feel the line jumping as we got closer to the first hooks. The anchor came up followed by 3 halibut and it didn’t stop after that. Halibut after halibut it was all we could do to get them dressed and iced.  After two days, no sleep, strong coffee and some sore backs we had our quota filled. We steamed straight for Port Hardy with our haul.
I hope you enjoy our catch!
