Meet Our Fishermen

Otto Strobel

Salmon Fisherman

Otto was our primary fisherman up until he retired at the end of the 2016 fishing season. Otto didn’t miss a salmon fishing season between 1969 and 2016! During that time, Otto was a high school chemistry teacher at Penticton High School and, for 20 years, owned and operated an apple orchard in Summerland, while fishing his summers on the family salmon gillnetter.

Duncan Cameron & Sarah Clarke

Halibut, Spot Prawn & Dungeness Crab Fisherman

A fourth generation Canadian fisherman from Pender Harbour, British Columbia, Duncan grew up fishing salmon and halibut from the time he was six years old. He never thought he would end up being a fisherman and moved to Vancouver to study at BCIT. But he soon realized that he was never going to be able to get the salt water out of his veins. He fishes full time now selling his catch to CSF members as well as to other local stores and restaurants. Sarah began fishing with Duncan in 2015.

Rod now fishes for salmon for our CSF in Barkley and Nootka Sounds off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Bill Dockar started his fishing career in 1969 as a teenager working aboard a packer. His grandfather was a fisherman and coastal hand logger. “Yellow” Bill Dockar got his nickname because he and another fisherman, Bill Barry, have exactly the same boat, but Yellow Bill’s boat is yellow and White Bill’s boat is white. For decades, the nicknames “Yellow Bill” and “White Bill” have been commonly heard over the radio in the northern and central coast fishing grounds!

Leaving in early spring, the father-son fishing team trolls their way up the coast, fishing for lingcod, salmon, and other bountiful species, gutting and flash-freezing as they go. They fish off Haida Gwaii and out of Prince Rupert for much of the summer, providing their premium, troll caught fish directly to our CSF members.

Delia Becker & Scott Rempel

Oyster Growers

We first met Delia back in the June of 2015 when she emailed us looking for a way to connect her lovingly-grown oysters and clams to local consumers. She had heard about our CSF and was very eager that our innovative model of connecting fishermen directly to consumers might provide an alternative to selling her shellfish overseas, as is the case with the vast majority of our locally grown shellfish. We were intrigued at the possibility of being able to offer ethical, local shellfish directly to our members and at being able to help the shellfish growers of Cortes Island continue their traditional, small-scale way of life!

To find out more about them, read our blog post “Now Offering Oysters!” from March 9, 2016.

Inge Norinseth

Salmon Fisherman

Inge is a Norwegian-Canadian fisherman who worked on the traditional halibut schooners in Alaska and even whaled on the BC coast before the 1969 moratorium! Inge and Skipper Otto have fished the same areas since the 1980’s. Today, Inge continues to fish for salmon on his 35 foot gillnetter, Viking Sun.
