Our Richmond Community Partner: The Gulf of Georgia Cannery

Sonia - January 22, 2016

We’re delighted to introduce you to our brand new Community Partner in Richmond . . .

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society honours Canada’s fishing heritage by preserving and promoting West Coast fishing history. We’re delighted that The Gulf of Georgia Cannery will begin to distribute CSF member shares starting in February 2016!

The Cannery has been near and dear to our hearts for many, many years. When Otto began fishing in the 1960’s, it was out of Steveston and this is really the community of fishing that his son, my husband Shaun grew up in . When Shaun was a graduate student studying fishing history, he worked in curatorial at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. And, more recently, we’ve been honoured to attend and speak at a variety of events on the fishing industry and our CSF at the Cannery.

In 2015, we began to look for ways to offer convenient pick-up locations for our members who live a little farther away from the False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf. I found myself with an introduction to Executive Director, Rebecca Clarke, to Operations Manager Rob Hart at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. They were enthusiastic about helping distribute shares to our CSF members and we soon made a plan to begin in February of 2016!

The Community Partnership model is working beautifully for pick-up in locations across western Canada and we’re excited to have The Gulf of Georgia Cannery come on board as a new partner this year! In addition to offering a super-convenient pick-up location, I know our members will enjoy visiting this National Historic Site and learning more about the history of our fishing industry!

If you are in Richmond, drop by and say hello to our friends at The Gulf of Georgia Cannery!

Check our event calendar for details of all our BC pick-ups!
